Meet Our Five Wisdoms Friends

Discover the Energies that Run Our Lives

This is a recorded course to do at your own pace

Part I: Meet Our Five Wisdoms Friends

This course brings alive, visually, the characters I first wrote about in Natural Brilliance: A Buddhist System for Uncovering Your Strengths and Letting Them Shine.  To bring out their distinctive features, I created characters who are the epitome of each energy. In real life we would never see such stark contrast among them, since the energies are always combined rather than mono-dimensional.  I've used men's names for the two characters whose energies manifest more masculine qualities (whether in a man or a woman), and women's names for the two whose energies manifest more feminine qualities. Buddha energy has no gender, so I arbitrarily gave it a man's name.

To give an integral perspective, each character is described in five modes: physical, emotional/expressive, mental, quality/essence, and activity. Simply put, body, speech, mind, quality, and action, or BSMQA

In the lessons that follow, you'll meet each of them in turn.

Part II: Experiential Learning

This section of the course offers two ways to deepen your understanding: audio recordings and infographics. The recordings are guided meditations, contemplations, and exercises. The infographics are visual aids.

Part III: Relational Dynamics

Beyond their individual characteristics, it's interesting to see how the Five Wisdoms Friends react and respond to one another's energies. I have created 10 versions that show every Friend relating to each of the others, in both stuck and shine energy. These are possible interactions based on each Friend's characteristic tendencies. What they say to each other is made more explicit for teaching purposes. It is not necessarily how people will talk.

My Story

One summer day in 1976, I was sitting in a friend’s apartment in Boulder, CO, where we were both assistant teaching at Naropa Institute [now University], a school that focuses on training in the arts, Buddhism, and contemplative psychotherapy. I was reading "Cutting through Spiritual Materialism," written by Naropa’s founder, the Tibetan meditation master Chögyam Trungpa. The following passage caught my eye: “In the Tantric tradition energy is categorized in five basic qualities or Buddha Families: Vajra, Ratna, Padma, Karma and Buddha. Each Buddha family has an emotion associated with it which is transmuted into a particular ‘wisdom’ or aspect of the awakened state of mind. The Buddha families are also associated with colors, elements, landscapes, directions, seasons, with any aspect of the phenomenal world.”

Reading those words changed my life. It led me to a contemplative tradition with an understanding of energy at its core. My immediate connection came from my passion for exploring the dynamic qualities of expressive movement as a dancer and choreographer. I explored human emotions—the heat of love, the strength of anger, the stiffness of pride, the sparkle of joy. So I instinctively knew about the energies of which he wrote. My awareness of these energies began to color my perspective in many aspects of my life, particularly my relationships with people. Why was it that one man brought out my intellectual curiosity and another my physical desire? Why did I feel at ease with one person and anxious with another? Why would I feel powerful in one situation but inhibited and frustrated in another? What was the energetic relationship between myself, these people, and these situations?

Almost 50 years later, I am still at it!
