YEAR ONE – PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
DEVELOPING EMOTIONAL AND INTUITIVE INTELLIGENCE

The focus of year one is on cultivating a full spectrum of personal awareness disciplines and understanding both intellectually and emotionally five energetic styles or qualities.

MODULE I FIVE WISDOM ENERGIES [WEEKEND]

Our sanity and neurosis are complementary aspects of our energetic style. By practicing mindfulness we integrate body and mind, cultivating the ability to be receptive, fresh and spontaneous. By practicing the postures of the five qualities, we recognize our patterns and learn to embrace all aspects of ourselves. With more personal awareness, relaxation and friendliness (maitri) towards ourselves, we move away from rejecting our neurosis to seeing our intrinsic sanity. We can become a highly-tuned psychophysical being relating to the energy in ourselves and our surroundings. Participants will meet in monthly Reflection Circles as peers to provide continuity between modules and learn from each others’ experiences. Participants will be expected to bring sitting meditation practice into their lives and are highly encouraged to have a mind/body discipline.

MODULE II EXPERIENTIAL WISDOM [WEEKEND]

Our experience of the energies comes by opening our sense perceptions. Each sense perception experiences the world in a different way thus opening us to five fields of awareness. Once we have experienced a fullness of being through our senses, we discover our own passionate connection to our world and creativity arises naturally. Then we can interact with the world with creativity and wisdom. We will explore individually and as a group the many ways in which we can experience the energies including movement, sound, music, color and shape. Everyone will create a personal mandala as expression of who they are.

MODULE III EMOTIONAL WISDOM [WEEKEND]

We can develop a highly sophisticated understanding of the function of mind in both its sane and confused aspects. Becoming familiar with our deeply engrained habitual patterns and convoluted logics of mind, or story-line, we see how this creates the confusion of seeing ourselves as a separate entity in battle with the world. We come to see how we create our version of reality. The deepest understanding of ourselves is gained by working with our emotions. We can learn to welcome our emotions as a vivid display of energy. When our energy is most negatively intensified, it is also the most brilliant. Our wisdom is very close at hand. Fully embracing the emotions that bind us liberates us. By becoming friends with our emotions, having maitri, we can discover how to be who we are unreservedly. Compassionate exchange practice, tonglen, is introduced.

MODULE IV AUTHENTIC RELATIONSHIPS [WEEKEND]

Cultivating authentic relationships requires that we develop certain skills. In an interpersonal practice, we choose someone (not present) with whom we would like to improve our relationship. We present their body, speech and mind, the three modes of being at a physical, energetic/emotional and mental level. By describing someone with careful attention to detail, our discipline is avoid projection and interpretation and to evoke their presence. The purpose of this practice is to break down the barrier between our self and another, allowing us to enter their world and see them more clearly. In thus bringing them to life, we keenly feel their pain or problems and also their intelligence or sanity. We have more compassion for them. We also become aware of the fourth and fifth modes, their quality or energetic style and their way of acting in the world. Fieldwork Projects are introduced.

YEAR TWO – PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
APPLICATIONS IN THE WORKPLACE

Individually guided learning brings out the material’s relevancy in one’s professional area and provides tools for specific challenges such as excessive work-flow, provocative professional relationships and stress.

MODULE V WORKING WITH OTHERS [WEEKEND]

Mindfulness practice grounds the interpersonal practice of working with others, as we train to be continuously present and relaxed even in difficult relationships. We will review presentations in three modes and then work with four aspects of conscious relationships: compassionate presence, energetic exchange, intuitive understanding of another, and knowing what to do (covered in Module VI). Awareness of the five qualities reveals differences, provides a common language, and fosters skillful communication. We can learn to continually align ourselves with the goodness and sanity in all human beings and take action based on clarity and benevolence. In working with others the emphasis is on seeing any state of mind as workable, just as it is. The goal is not to change people but to see them more fully as they are. In seeing them fully, we see them as workable.

MODULE VI WISDOM ACTIVITY [WEEKEND]

We will work further with contemplative approaches to working with others by coming to an experiential understand of qualities of a compassionate person. This will include tonglen and slogan practice. Slogans serve as a reminder to open our hearts and minds in everyday life. Through personal investigation we will work on our obstacles to genuine compassion. We will also continue working with the four aspects and emphasize knowing what to do. In addition there will be experiential work with non violent communication and conflict facilitation.

MODULE VII WISDOM MANDALA [FIVE DAYS RESIDENTIAL RETREAT]

Wisdom energy--the inseparability of confusion and sanity--is an unbiased, transpersonal knowing or intuitive understanding, both spacious and brilliant. It is always at work within us; we only have to realize it. When we manifest our wisdom, we are no longer biased towards a personal identify. We tune into the totality of the five energies and ride the energy of the moment. We experience our connection to everyone and everything in the mandala. This is aided by understanding the four powers or wisdom activity of each energy. Acting in accord with these four powers is fundamentally beneficial beyond personal territory. Then we could be anywhere and become anything but always connected with whatever is needed. This is the magic dance of no self.

MODULE VIII FIELDWORK PROJECTS [WEEKEND]

This module is the culmination of the work in bringing the training into the work place. Participants will present their understanding and experience as it applies to their professional activities.

SOME EXAMPLES OF APPLICATIONS

Contemplative Health Care

The training is based on contemplative psychology/psychotherapy:

  • making ongoing work with oneself the ground for work with others
  • aligning oneself with the goodness and sanity in all human beings
  • cultivating openness and compassion which allows us to fully appreciate another human being
  • willingly entering someone’s world as the first step in helping them
  • taking action based on clarity and benevolence

This training provides a range of contemplative skills for the treatment of all aspects of health care: family and individual therapy, geriatric and hospice care, depression, grief management, pain management. As well, health caregivers themselves benefit from techniques designed to release tension, counter burn out, and manage stress. One’s work is reinvigorated and one becomes empowered to continuously meet the challenging situations that arise in working with others.

The five wisdom qualities are at the heart of the contemplative psychology/psychotherapy. By taking specific postures in colored environments, we experience both the sane and neurotic aspects of each quality in ourselves, and so begin to see them in others. In working with others the emphasis is on seeing any state of mind as workable, just as it is—including ordinary suffering and major illness. The goal is not to change people but to see them more fully as they are. In seeing them fully, one sees them as workable.

ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERS

The success of an organization depends on people’s ability to understand themselves and others and to communicate effectively. At their best, diverse styles are an asset; at their worst, they block communication. This work focuses on bringing out one’s full human potential in working with others. When we embody the five qualities of presence in an authentic way, we see people more clearly and are then more likely to know how to work with them. We encourage organizations to improve the quality of their work environment and work life. We are interested in bringing people from passive involvement in their work to realizing their full creative potential and producing at a high standard.

Training workshops and coaching at all levels of management include unique exercises in:

Personal Disciplines

  • establishing self awareness disciplines
  • cultivating relaxation and kindness towards self and others
  • engendering creative approaches which don't solidify into establishing territory

Communication

  • cultivating awareness of differences in leadership styles
  • looking at the dynamics of personality styles and relationships
  • relating consciously and communicating effectively
  • letting go of self-referencing and only seeing one’s own side of things

Team Building and Leadership

  • looking at the different personality styles needed to make an effective team
  • encouraging people to look at the big picture in an unbiased way
  • seeing how people get stuck and using that as a work point
  • seeing how people shine and aligning with their sanity
  • have more cohesion based on mutual respect

Energy Dynamics and Flow Issues

  • seeing the energetic dynamics of a situation
  • looking at what is blocked and what is functioning smoothly
  • seeing stuck energy as the work point
  • acknowledging and supporting successful accomplishments

Project Management and Problem Solving

  • seeing the need for diverse perspectives within a shared vision
  • discriminating the skills (energies) needed for different aspects of a project
  • harnessing different energies needed to accomplish specific tasks
